# Dark theme

GrainBits ships with both a light and a dark theme, so your site looks great whether your readers are settling in for a late-night read or scrolling through on a sunny afternoon.

#### Automatic theme detection

By default, GrainBits follows your visitor's system settings. If their device is in dark mode, your site loads in dark mode. If it's in light mode, your site loads in light mode. No setup needed on your end—it just works.

#### Manual theme switching

For visitors who want to override their system settings, GrainBits includes a theme switcher in the top navigation. A quick tap or click flips the site between light and dark, regardless of what their device is doing.

Once a visitor makes a choice, the browser remembers it across sessions, so they'll land on their preferred theme every time they return. To change it again, they just use the switcher, and the new preference takes over.

{% hint style="info" %}
Tints shape the look of your site in light mode. Dark mode uses its own dedicated palette, designed to feel calm and easy on the eyes no matter which tint you've chosen for the light theme.
{% endhint %}
